A Few Words Concerning A-Skillz
A-Skillz makes you want to dance; or more specifically he makes you want to breakdance. I haven’t the foggiest idea of how to breakdance; but listening to him makes me want to attempt to anyway, no matter how ridiculous I may look doing so. No matter if you have two left feet, are on crutches, are rocking a wheel chair, or are just completely non-corporeal, you will FIND a way to get down. THAT is the power of the Big Beat/Breakbeat producing, title-winning turntablist.
Normally if asked about an upcoming artist, I would simply refer you to said act’s SoundCloud, but A-Skillz in particular bares special mention due in no small part to the plethora of music that influences both his productions and his DJ sets. From the sampling of Ol’ School Hip Hop to the House of the 90’s rave explosion; 80’s Funk to contemporary Mid Tempo and Nu Funk; Funky Breaks to newer trends like Bass and Trap, virtually no genre escapes inclusion in his repertoire.
He is one of those rock solid acts that finds a way to touch on everything in a way that is organic and makes musical sense. He puts something out there for everyone to identify with, making him a crowd-pleaser without him having to try. His track selection, flawless. His ability to drop acapellas at the perfect moment, uncanny. His scratching and showmanship, unsurpassed. He is in all respects an amazing performer and not to be missed. Every show he’s played in Vancouver has sold out and left people abuzz – Rightfully so.
Don’t take my word for it though. Go see him and hear him for yourself. You’ll be glad you did. If you do, then I challenge you not to break down and find something in his auditory arsenal that does not make you grin openly, drop your jaw, bust out, get down, or just plain run amuck. Such is the effect of A-Skillz.
